Chattambade/Masala vada is the spicy snack prepared using Channa dal & urad dal. This crunchy snack can be yours ideal evening tea time snack and can be eaten either with coconut chutney or tomato ketchup. Also this can be a side snack for your rasam rice/sambhar rice.


Add 1 cup of Channa dal and 1/4 cup of urad dal in a bowl.

Rinse the dal 2-3 times & soak it in water for 2-3 hours.

Drain off the water completely. Make sure that there shall not be any water left out.

Add 4-5 green chillies, 1 handful of pudina leaves, 2-3 twigs of curry leaves, ginger, hing, and salt in a bowl.

Transfer the above ingredients to a blender.

Grind it to a fine paste.

Now add the dal to the same blender and grind it only once for 8-10 seconds so that some grains are unbroken.

Transfer everything to a bowl. If you wish to add onions, you can add them here. We have not added onions.

Make a small lemon size balls.

Heat the oil in a pan.

Flatten the vada and drop it into the hot oil.

Deep fry the vadas until it turns golden and crispy.

Crispy masala vada/chattambade is ready to serve as a tea snack!!!
