Chitrana from ottu shavige/shemege, is a popular dish in the coastal region of Karnataka.
The chitrana masala prepared can be used for rice as well. We use coconut for the recipe.

Grate 1 cup of coconut.
In a mixer, add 1 tbsp of mustard seeds and 8 red chillies.
Grind it to a smooth paste.
In a kadai, heat 2 tbsp of oil.
Add 1/4 cup of groundnuts and fry on medium flame till they become brown.
Add 1 tsp of mustard seeds, and when it starts to splutter add channa dal, urad dal and dried red chillies. Fry until everything becomes brown.
Add green chillies and curry leaves.
Add the grinded coconut mixture to the kadai, fry for few minutes on medium flame, till all of them are completely mixed.
Add 3 tbsp jaggery and 2 tbsp tamarind juice, mix well.
Mix on a medium flame for 5 mins, till the jaggery is melted.
Add salt.
Keep stirring, until the colour of the mixture changes to a golden brown, and it starts to become thick.
Turn off the flame.
Once the gravy is cooled, add the ottu shavige to the kadai.
Mix well, Ottu shavige chitrana is ready!
