For our busy lifestyle, let us prepare today a tomato rasam without lentils. This is a very simple recipe to cook and very tasty. Tomato rasam or tomato saar is served with hot rice. We are not using lentils or toor dal for the rasam. This is a very popular recipe in South India.

Soak lemon size of tamarind in hot water for 20 minutes. Squeeze the tamarind and extract the tamarind water. Keep it aside.

Chop 5 medium tomatoes as shown in the image.

Transfer these chopped tomatoes to the mixer.

Grind the tomatoes to the smooth puree. (Don't add water while grinding)

Transfer the puree to a vessel and keep it for boiling. Add 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder.

Add 2 cups of water and mix well. Let it boil for 5-6 minutes in medium flame until the raw smell of tomatoes is gone.

Add extracted tamarind water and mix well.

Add salt as per taste and boil it for 3-4 minutes on medium flame.

Now add 1 tbsp of rasam powder and 1 tsp of jaggery. Cook this for 3-4 minutes.

Heat 2 tsp oil in a small pan.

Add 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds and 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds. Let them crackle.

Add 1-2 dried red chillies, a few curry leaves, and a pinch of hing.

Transfer this seasoning to the vessel and set it aside.

Hot Rasam is ready to serve with rice!
